San Antonio’s Martin Luther King Jr. March, one of the largest in the nation, was canceled this week over concerns about COVID-19 but the New Braunfels MLK Association, Inc. today said it plans to proceed with its annual event, only with “significant changes.”
Its 7th Annual MLK Jr. March is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17 in downtown New Braunfels.
All attendees are encouraged to wear surgical-quality masks and maintain social distancing. Food and beverages will not be served and the march and celebration will be entirely outdoors, according to association President Bishop Michael Franklin.
Both the length of the route and the duration of the program have been reduced.
This year’s march begins at Prince Solms Park and ends two blocks away at Main Plaza. Marchers are asked to gather beginning at 9:45 a.m. “Step-off” is scheduled for 10 a.m., followed by speakers and music from the plaza bandstand.
The keynote speaker is Cary Clack, an editorial writer and columnist with the San Antonio Express, who also is editing an anthology of Black Texas writers.
