Firefighters from around the New Braunfels area today successfully extinguished a fast-moving grass fire that threatened homes in the 4400 block of Highway 46 West in New Braunfels.
The fire was on a ranch bordering Highway 46 and Mission Valley Road with subdivisions backing up to the ranch along both roadways, New Braunfels Fire Department said in a statement.
The fire was extinguished around 6:30 p.m.
Airdrops of fire retardant helped contain the blaze, along with additional bulldozers from the Texas Forest Service, which strengthened and widened fire breaks made earlier by other heavy equipment.
The forest service and Texas Division of Emergency Management also provided aerial views for firefighters on the ground.
Firefighters will remain in the area into the overnight hours to make sure a “reignition” does not occur. Smoke will remain in the area.
Canyon Lake, Cibolo, Bulverde/Spring Branch, Bracken, and Schertz all sent firefighters and equipment to battle the blaze. San Marcos Fire Department provided mutual-aid assistance.
High winds and heavy brush in the area slowed progress over the course of the day.
