The ‘traditional’ burn ban went into effect at 6 a.m. today for all unincorporated areas of Comal County, including Canyon Lake.
The county was already under a limited burn ban which Pct. 4 (Canyon Lake) Comal County Commissioner Jen Crownover described as complicated and difficult to enforce.
“It was well-intended but ended up causing more conflict and confusion than solutions,” she said in a Facebook post.
The traditional burn ban allows the county judge to lift it for small periods of time if it rains, and provides favorable windows for burning.
Fire Marshal Kory Klabunde said low humidity, high winds and prolonged drought conditions — as well as several uncontrolled fires in Comal County and surrounding areas — resulted in a ban on all outdoor burning.
“Please stay safe, and hopefully we will receive a decent amount of much-needed rain soon,” he said. “Barbecue pits that are off the ground with a lid that contains all sparks and flames used for cooking purposes only will still be allowed.”
