Residents lined up to complain about soaring property valuations at last week’s Commissioners Court and protests also are expected during “Citizen Comments” at today’s 5:30 p.m. meeting of the Comal County Appraisal District (CAD), 900 South Seguin Ave., New Braunfels.
2022 values doubled and even tripled after CAD issued Jan. 1 assessments, the biggest single-year increase since 1980.
CAD sets taxable values for taxing jurisdictions in Comal County. Residents have until May 16 to file a protest with the appraisal district.
Also at today’s meeting, CAD also is expected to discuss the search for an interim chief appraiser to replace Ruffino Lozano, who resigned after an investigation about his management of employee benefits, pay and other duties.
Other agenda items include:
- Director of Operations Report about property value study update, update of 2022 valuations and protests, exemption status report and overview of CAD status.
- Taxpayer Liaison Officer Report on citizen feedback and comment cards.
- Financial Report including overview of CAD financials, maturing deposits and investment plan. update, and update of 2023 preliminary budget adjustments.
- Consideration of live-streaming board meetings.
