Rahe Bulverde Elementary School (RBES) third-grader Ellie Sotelo is this year’s Grand Prize Author in Comal ISD’s Third Grade Cursive Writing Contest, Capturing Comal in Cursive.
In her award-winning handwriting, Sotelo wrote: “Amazing Creatures – A horse’s cantering hooves kick up dust. As I watch the amazing creature fly across the field like a bird, I wonder how much weight its strong, slender body can carry.”
The cursive-writing contest combines the art of handwriting with the ability of students to create a descriptive narrative about their community.
The contest challenges students throughout the district to write a descriptive paragraph about one aspect of their communities they would like to share. Categories also include a local tradition, distinctive animal, or one of the area’s natural resources.
The Most Creative award winner is Salma Rosas, another BBES student who wrote about deer.
“Every day I leave or come home I see at least one deer,” she wrote. “Deer are very cute but can leave a mess behind. Fun Fact: Deer poo looks like beans so make sure your kid doesn’t eat it!”
Best Word Choice winner is BBES’ Emily Crick, who wrote: “Plants are also very useful because plants give you delicious and healthy food such as crunchy carrots, juicy apples and yummy pears.”
BBES student Robert Stuart captured Most Content Knowledge with “Dio de los Muertos is a festival in the Hispanic culture. It is held in downtown New Braunfels.”
Rahe Bulverde Elementary School (RBES) third-grader Merit Snow won Best Sensory Details award by writing, “Every time walk into Tejas Rodeo I smell the delicious food from the grill.”
Best Penmanship winner is RBES’ Jenna Gossett, who wrote: “I have gone to the Guadalupe River a lot and when I go there I see trees, flowers and rocks surrounding the river.”
Student winners were honored by Comal ISD trustees at their April meeting.
