Spring Branch resident Ken Edwards lost his son, 11-year-old Mountain Valley Middle School (MVMS) student Brendan, and 40-year-old wife Melissa in November 2019 after an alleged drunk driver heading eastbound swerved into their lane on FM 306.
Department of Public Safety (DPS) Sgt. Gus Moreno said 40-year-old Dave Michael Estes of New Braunfels was traveling eastbound on FM 306 when his 2015 Nissan Altima struck Edwards’ 2018 Ford Escape, which was traveling westbound between Purgatory Road and River Chase Drive.
Melissa Edwards’ 93-year-old grandfather, Walton Walker, also was killed in the fiery accident.
This year Edwards will honor Brendan’s memory by hosting a ‘Mobile Pack’ event May 17-18 for Feed My Starving Children, a charity that provides 100,000 nutritious meals for kids worldwide — “something Brendan would have loved doing with his friends.”
In an obituary in 2019 he described his son as possessing a “wild spirit that was curious beyond reason, loved to help out, stood up for what he felt was right (and he was always right) and couldn’t be stopped if he wanted to do something.”
In a March 29 letter, MVMS Principal Angela Looney said Brendan was loved by all and his loss was deeply felt on campus.
Edwards said one of the things Brendan especially loved was volunteering with Feed My Starving Children.
He’s set a $25,000 fundraising goal for the Mobile Pack event at MVMS, where more than 800 seventh- and eighth-grade student volunteers will measure and scoop ingredients, seal bags and prepare boxes for shipping.
Corporate sponsors also are needed.
Volunteers are needed from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 17 and from 3:15 to 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18.

FMSC is a Christian nonprofit dedicated to providing nutritious meals to children worldwide. Meals are hand-packed by volunteers and sent to partner organizations to distribute to those in need. Nearly 1.2 million volunteers packed more than 333 million FMSC meals in 2017. More than 90-percent of total donations go directly to feed kids.
