New Braunfels MLK Association’s 2023 Annual MLK March and Ceremony starts at 10 a.m. Monday at Prince Solms Park in New Braunfels, heads downtown to the Main Plaza and ends at the New Braunfels Civic Convention Center.
A ceremony is planned, along with musical celebrations.
This year’s march also includes a canned food drive.
Buses are available to transport members of the public from one location to the other.
Organizers say the event is nonpartisan and ask parade-goers to leave political signs at home.
All Comal County offices will close in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Tye Preston Memorial Library will close.
Henry Ford, the 73-year-old founder of the New Braunfels MLK Association, died just over a year ago, on Jan. 2, 2022.
He organized the group after returning from an out-of-town trip eight years ago and reading about a Canyon High School student who was counted absent for attending a Martin Luther King Day march in San Antonio because there wasn’t one in New Braunfels.
That student, Jon Michael Franklin, was later honored by former President Barack Obama.
People here are more likely to follow the words of Trump over MLK. These people aren’t very bright and they confused being a good Christian with being a racist. Not everyone in my city is racist but they are here and they are proud to be ignorant.
