Oak trees are down and bushes are covered in ice after a night of ‘snap, crackle and popping’ sounds of falling limbs kept many Canyon Lake residents worried about power lines.

As of 2:40 p.m. there are multiple reports of downed power lines on or near major roadways, including highways 46 and 281. A Facebook page not affiliated with Comal County or considered an official source, Comal County Scanner, is live-blogging information broadcast over police radio.

As of 11:23 a.m. there are 6,341 meters affected/35,489 meters served in Comal County on Pedernales Electric Cooperative’s (PEC)  outage map

Systemwide PEC reports 95.724% of its meters are with power.

Ice accumulation is widespread across the Hill Country and I-35 this morning.

Freezing rain could continue to fall over much of South Central Texas through Thursday morning, the U.S. National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio said. Additional light ice accumulations remain possible.

“Just a reminder that while the heaviest precipitation is now behind us, this winter storm is not yet over,” an administrator posted on the weather service’s Facebook page at 10:30 a.m. “Freezing drizzle and light freezing rain will continue off and on today into night for the Hill Country and much of the Austin metro area. Don’t assume roads that were just wet earlier will be safe now.”

A winter storm warning remains in effect in Comal and Guadalupe counties through Thursday morning.

This weather event will be marked by prolonged periods of cold temperatures with many locations in the Hill Country not expected to warm back to above freezing until Thursday, the weather service said.

As of 5:15 a.m. icy conditions continue north of a freezing line, which extends from Pleasanton, to Cuero, Gonzalez to La Grange.

Precipitation has diminished across San Antonio and Bexar County but continues north across the Hill Country and along/east of the I-35 corridor.

Additional rounds of activity are possible today into tonight.
