Animal advocates and dog lovers are planning a protest from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Canyon Lake Animal Shelter Society (CLASS), 2170 Old Sattler Road.

The public is invited to join an informal coalition of residents who have warned of problems at the animal shelter since Darrell and Kelly Mayfield took it over after Angie Gilstrap resigned in June 2021.

Tensions came to a head when Vice President Kelly Mayfield texted former Kennel Manager Jennifer Thompson and instructed her to euthanize a dying puppy by sticking it in a freezer.

Since that Jan. 8 text went public on Feb. 7, CLASS has faced intense scrutiny and is currently the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Comal County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO).

Parking is available at the body shop across the street from the shelter.

  1. I hope Darrel and Kelly are prosecuted! We got major screwed! They adopted a heart worm positive dog to us w/o telling us. Won’t answer or return calls for promised spaying.

  2. How can the shelter be sold to indivuduals. The community started and donated for it. I believe the community built it from donations and people willed alot when they died. Mayfields need to go. It belongs to Canyon Lake Animals. Angie Gilstrap please come back Help
