Canyon Lake Animal Shelter Society (CLASS) raised $27,105 at ‘The Return of No Kill in the Hills’ fundraiser Sunday at the River Rose Tavern in Canyon Lake.
“I’m so grateful,” said CLASS President Debbie England, administrator of a popular Canyon Lake Facebook page and owner of an automotive repair shop. “I’m afraid there aren’t enough words to express how loved, how incredibly grateful I am.”
On Facebook last week, she summarized her accomplishments since disgraced former CLASS president Darrell Mayfield nominated her to the board in March, including hiring the right staff, cleaning up the shelter, kicking off an enrichment program for dogs without toys, setting up a spay/neuter clinic, making sure all dogs are walked, organizing ‘meet and greets’ to socialize dogs who have endured months of kenneling, and providing basic medical care for these neglected animals.
Many in the Canyon Lake community credit England for turning the shelter around after Mayfield and his wife Kelly were finally ousted after 1 1/2 years of animal cruelty and neglect.
