The partial remains of a New Braunfels soldier who went missing in action during the Korean War return to New Braunfels, with honors, Tuesday morning.
A motorcade for Sgt. Gilberto Lopez Sanchez leaves San Antonio International Airport around 10:30 a.m. and travels along I-35, arriving at Seguin Avenue and driving past Main Plaza between 11 and 11:15 a.m.
Police, fire and local veterans groups will honor the fallen soldier as the procession makes its way from Main Plaza to Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home, 189 N. Seguin Ave., New Braunfels.
The public is asked to avoid parking or standing in the way of the procession.
A series of memorial services are open to the public. A rosary service is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A funeral mass follows at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 215 S. Hidalgo Ave.
Sanchez was considered missing in action and presumed dead in 1950. In 2014, his partial remains were identified by DNA testing and a funeral service was held in New Braunfels in January 2015. He received full military honors and was buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
Additional remains were identified by the U.S. military and transported to San Antonio.
