Wayne Weston’s Canyon Lake Square Dance Club returns to the building behind Goofy’s Bar and Grill, 13124 FM 306, at 6 p.m. today with $5 lessons and the chance to have “good, clean fun.”
“Enjoy dancing and laughter with a fun-loving group of people,” a post on Facebook invites the public.
The club’s flyer describes square dancing as “friendship set to music.”
Singles and families are welcome, and no experience is required.
Classes are free today. A 20-week class begins Jan. 17. The charge is $80 per person. Classes meet Wednesdays from 6-7:30 p.m.
Vickie Merchant, who helps with publicity, said she started dancing as a teenager “100 years ago.”
She’s hoping 50-somethings and empty nesters who might be new to the Canyon Lake area will discover the joy of square dancing.
“It’s just good clean fun,” she said. “There’s no alcohol, no drugs and no smoking.”
One night, she said a man at Goofy’s called his wife to tell her it was unbelievable how much fun people were having square dancing behind the bar.
Merchant said square dancing entails walking within a square with a group of eight people (four couples) and listening to a caller.
The caller gives the dancers the name of the synchronized movements, or “calls,” each set to music.
Attire is casual. Merchant advises newbies to wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers since people get warmer as they dance.
Canyon Lake’s square-dancing club is part of the Austin Square and Round Dance Association.
