The Water Oriented Recreation District of Comal County (WORD) can’t do anything about the drought or low lake levels causing Canyon Park’s shoreline to dry up but it does want to add new and improved park amenities that will benefit visitors.
The Parks Department posted an online survey Wednesday asking the public to choose new amenities for the park.
The survey closes on Feb. 9.
Choices include a swimming platform, a walkway over the water, improved access paths to the water (steps, handrails, etc.) tables in the water, playground equipment, sports amenities (sand volleyball, tetherball, soccer goals, etc.), a hammock garden for lakeview relaxation, and a fishing pier.
Upgrades to the 485-acre park on the north side of Canyon Lake will be funded by visitor entrance fees, which are $5 per vehicle with a Comal County registration sticker and $20 per non-Comal County registered vehicle.
The park reopens in March but Canyon Lake Boat Ramp #18 is open seven days a week. It’s one of only two ramps still usable. Number 19 is still open at Canyon Lake Marina.
In December, Comal County commissioners approved a $4.5 million budget for WORD, which issues permits to water-related businesses, allowing them to collect user fees from customers visiting the district.
General Manager Mike Dussere said he downgraded revenue expectations due to the impact of excessive drought on water recreation.
