Rare 2.1 Magnitude Earthquake Reported in Canyon Lake Area

A rare 2.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Canyon Lake area around 11:55 a.m. today.

According to the U.S. Geological Service, the quake occurred at a depth of 1.2 miles, approximately six miles east-southeast of Canyon Lake.

It went largely unnoticed by residents according to multiple reports on social media, although many armchair pundits weighed in.

“There’s a report of an earthquake this morning in the Canyon Lake area,” posted one resident, along with a photo of an upturned lawn chair. “Tsunami coming from the lake. We will rebuild.”

Earthquakes are rare in Central Texas. The largest and closest nearby earthquake was reported in Giddings five months ago. The magnitude was 2.8 on the Richter scale.

According to earthquaketrack.com 22 earthquakes were reported in Texas over the last 24 hours and 118 over the past seven days.
