Breakwater Grill & Cantina on Canyon Lake will close for the fall and winter seasons to “evaluate” operations as lake levels continue to plummet due to drought.
The restaurant is located next to Canyon Lake Marina.
In a statement, Breakwater thanked the Canyon Lake community and visitors who stopped by early in the season.
“We’re hopeful that, with a little rainfall, we’ll be ready to welcome you back in the spring,” Breakwater said.
The kitchen is officially closed, but the bar will remain open from noon to sunset Saturdays and Sundays until inventory is depleted.
Breakwater opened in October 2023, calling itself the “premier lakeside dining oasis.”
Canyon Lake resident Austin Hanna, part owner of Double Schott’s Sports & Bar Grill in New Braunfels, took over from Baja Icehouse & Grill, which closed in March 2023.
The news of bringing in a new Bar and Grill to replace the void left by the closing of the Baja was exciting as the area’s premiere location being a feature because of the lake. Baja had great success for years and is so sad that conflict with the lease had to be its demise. It was our hotspot, and you could always see so many regulars there and meet so many news ones just about every time you went. It was almost a culture. Most didn’t even own a boat and were just there for the party. The Baja had signature food and drinks and sometimes was just “hit-and-miss’; but it didn’t matter. The place brought in a lot of the same full bands, and you could always count on a following, sometimes packing them in- and not just duos. The difference now and if the Breakwater wanted to succeed as a “restaurant” (and a premiere one) they should have been serious and brought in chefs and top-quality cuisine. Lake levels were never the attraction. If there’s still a chance, make that place either hopping joint or a real good restaurant. Canyon Lake needs it.
