Lairds Hideaway Pickleball Courts & RV Park on the north side of Canyon Lake celebrates its unofficial grand opening from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16.

The 10-spot park, located at 14181 FM 306, features seven top-of-the-line pickleball courts open to the public six days a week.

Saturday, a pickleball professional will oversee free, open-play games from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Proceeds from a raffle benefit the Canyon Lake Animal Shelter Society (CLASS), which also will bring adoptable pets to the event. Canyon Lake Fire/EMS Station 51’s fire truck will be parked nearby. The grand opening includes a free bounce house for kids.

Q’s Place Creole Cooking & Seafood, Devine Desserts by Doris, Sweet Cart Creations, Mrs. Bush Pies, and Litia’s Cuisine will sell food and drinks.

Bret and Joyce Laird purchased the land for their RV park in February and opened the business in May. Also located on the property are two containers for an office and pro shop, and a gym for guests.

The RV park sits on 2.6 acres of land the Lairds purchased from Church in the Valley, which poured a 16,000-square-foot foundation 30 years ago for a facility it never added.

The Lairds built the park and pickleball courts literally with their own hands and the help of septic and fencing companies.

Future plans for the facility include adding a food truck selling burgers and wraps and obtaining a beer-and-wine license.

Joyce Laird said most visitors describe the premises as “small and quaint.” There isn’t a lot of noise despite its location on FM 306, next to Church in the Valley.

She said husband Bret owned a landscaping and sprinkler business in Houston for 36 years. The couple moved to Canyon Lake six years ago and purchased two acres where they now live. They added three tiny homes to that property and ran a business managing vacation rentals, now closed.

Daughter Lauren Laird helps her family run the business’s computer system. Daughter, Ashley Conover, manages social media and Stephanie Laird Dominguez designed the business’s flyer and helps out as-needed.
