At 11 a.m. today, Comal County canceled a burn ban that went into effect at 6 a.m.
The burn ban is off — again.
On Wednesday, after several days of light drizzle, Comal County temporarily rescinded a burn ban signed by County Judge Sherman Krause on Jan. 16, warning it was just a temporary reprieve.
Wednesday, the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) — the threshold at which burn bans are imposed — was around 500 points. Today it fell even further thanks to heavier rain Wednesday and Thursday.
Fire Marshal Kory Klabunde apologized for the confusion.
“The temporary lifting of the burn ban ended this morning at 6 a.m.,” he said in a Facebook post at 11 a.m. today. “The new drought numbers did not come out until 10 a.m. We are currently at a KBDI of 474 as of 10 a.m. this morning. Please stay safe and follow all TCEQ burn rules.”
Burn bans are intended to prevent wildfires and protect the community.
