Heading to Canyon Lake for Memorial Day weekend?
So is the Comal County sheriff. And Pct. 1 and Pct. 4 constables.
Sheriff Mark Reynolds plans to dispatch more deputies to the parks around Canyon Lake and to patrols on Canyon Lake and River Road.
Pct. 1 Constable Charlie Motz promises New Braunfels police, county constables, and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will be out on roadways and waterways this weekend “with a heightened and concentrated effort to curb illegal activity in an effort to keep residents and visitors safe.”
Their message to everyone planning to enjoy the holiday on Canyon Lake and the Guadalupe River is to practice caution and stay safe while engaging in water-related activities.
“As we are all aware, the water level on Canyon Lake is down and there may be underwater hazards not experienced in several years,” Reynolds said. “When swimming or tubing use life jackets and the ‘buddy system.’ Make sure to stay hydrated and monitor the heat.”
The area at FM 306 and the Guadalupe River “Horseshoe” is still under construction. Residents and visitors driving around this area are warned to look out for tubers and pedestrians trying to cross roadways.
“Unfortunately, some individuals take festivities a little too far, which too often results in injury, arrest, or even death,” Motz said. “Historically, law enforcement observes an increase in cases involving intoxicated driving, intoxicated boating and assault among others.”
Choosing a designated driver or rideshare service is recommended.
“We all wish everyone to enjoy the Memorial Day weekend, be safe and have a good time,” Reynolds said.
