The Bulverde Area Humane Society (BAHS) will no longer accept dogs or cats due to a rabies outbreak.

The shelter, located at 3563 Kingsnake, remains open and has no confirmed cases of rabies, according to a post by an administrator on social media Monday.

All staff and animals are okay.

“We are closed to all intakes until a plan of intake can be prepared to ensure the safety of our staff and volunteers,” the Humane Society said. “We will send an update with guidelines for intakes in the near future.”

The move was sparked by “the most recent rabies outbreak and current case at Highway 281 and FM 1863.”

On June 3, Comal County Animal Control issued a statement alerting the public that a feral cat located near the intersection had tested positive for the rabies virus, marking the 12th confirmed case this year.

Animal Control warned residents in the affected and neighboring areas to avoid contact with skunks, foxes and other wildlife, especially if they exhibit unusual behavior.

In a separate statement on June 11, Comal County reported 14 animals have tested positive for rabies so far this year, and two more are under suspicion.

“In the latest case in Bulverde, a resident reported a rabid cat attacking their dog during a walk,” the county said. “Confirmed rabies cases this year have included foxes, cats, bats, and a coyote.”

BAHS is an all-volunteer, nonprofit, non-governmental, no-kill shelter that provides a caring and secure environment for homeless and surrendered dogs and cats.
