The lower Guadalupe River from Canyon Dam to New Braunfels reopened to recreational access Thursday after crews cleaned up debris and navigational hazards and tested water quality at multiple points on Canyon Lake.
Heavy rains flooded the area two weeks ago. Flooding on that part of the river is unrelated to the tragedy that unfolded in the upper Guadalupe River on July 4.
The stretch of the Guadalupe below Canyon Lake is home to many family-run river outfitters, campgrounds, and lodges.
“However, visitors should always exercise caution in natural waterways, as currents, debris, and contaminants can pose a risk,” WORD of Comal County General Manager Mike Dussere said in a statement. “Please note that upstream conditions along the upper Guadalupe River west of Canyon Lake are markedly different.
“Flow rates remain elevated and debris removal efforts are ongoing.”
