Comal County is included in a disaster declaration issued Friday due to the increased risk of wildfires in 179 counties.

Gov. Greg Abbott Friday instructed the Texas Department of Emergency Management (TDEM) to deploy additional resources in preparation for potential wildfires in the eastern half of the state and possibly severe weekend flooding in West Texas.

Texas A&M Forest Service raised its Wildlife Fire Preparedness Level to a three, indicating wildfire activity is impacting several regions of the state as the result of drought, dry vegetation and frequent “fire-weather” events.

The forest service will strategically position personnel, equipment and aircraft in areas at risk.

Last week over 50 wildfires burned more than 3,000 acres across the state.
