The City of New Braunfels and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will receive millions of dollars in funding from the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO) for area road-construction and sidewalk projects, the city said in a statement Friday, Dec. 19.

New Braunfels will work with AAMPO and TxDOT to move these projects forward, with construction expected to begin between fiscal years 2026-2032.

Comal County Pct. 1 Commissioner Doug Leecock said none of the projects earmarked for extra funding will impact Canyon Lake roadways.

Three of the seven projects already underway will receive:

    • an additional $7.5 million for the City’s $22 million Barbarosa Road/Saur Lane Improvement Project. Those additional funds bring the federal contribution for that project to $17.6 million.
    • an additional $8.3 million for TxDOT’s FM 725 Improvement Project
    • additional $14.3 million for TxDOT’s I-35 at Solms Interchange Improvement Project

AAMPO’s Transportation Policy Board approved approximately $56.25 million for new local transportation projects that focus on multimodal mobility improvements, including:

  • $4.27 million for the New Braunfels’ Citywide Pedestrian Improvements Project, adding sidewalks along North Peach, North Plum, and North Grape avenues, as well as adding sidewalks to Avery Parkway in the area around Clear Springs Elementary School, and continuing improvements to the shared-use path on Hanz Drive
  • $17.87 million for the City’s West San Antonio Street and Spur Street Improvement Project between Hildago Avenue and Walnut Ave, adding turning and parking lanes, sidewalks, intersection and drainage improvements, and right-of-way enhancements
  • $450,000 for the City’s Signal Timing Optimization Project
  • $33.66 million for TxDOT’s I-35 at Loop 337/Rueckle Road Interchange Improvement Project, adding additional intersection lanes and new I-35 access turnaround lanes
