Deputies with the Comal County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) seized 23 horses from a Bulverde property Friday following a years-long investigation into animal cruelty and neglect.

The investigation is ongoing, and a hearing will be scheduled to determine what happens to the horses and whether charges can be filed against their owners.

CCSO declined to reveal the horses’ new location.

CCSO worked with the American Humane Society and the Texas Livestock Protection Association (TLPA) to review the situation, coordinate removal, and relocate the horses to a safe location.

The operation came after 28 welfare-concern calls to the sheriff’s office.

A licensed veterinarian evaluated the animals and determined they were being neglected and cruelly treated in violation of Texas Health and Safety Code, Chapter 821.

Anyone wishing to support the horses’ care can donate to the TLPA or the American Humane Society, Comal County spokesperson Cary Zayas said in a statement today.
