A flood watch remains in effect for the Canyon Lake area through Thursday evening, with isolated storm totals of two to six inches possible.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Fort Worth District (USACE) — which owns and operates Canyon Lake — advises boaters to check the weather forecast and file a float plan with a trusted person who is not on the trip before launching a vessel.
Recreationalists should carry up-to-date maps or nautical charts, along with a weather radio or another reliable device, to monitor changing conditions while boating.
Take precautions to help improve control of a vessel and reduce the risk of capsizing in rough conditions:
- In the event of a storm, ensure everyone is wearing a properly fitted life jacket.
- Passengers should sit low in the boat near the centerline to help maintain stability.
- Boat captains should reduce speed and navigate their vessels with the bow pointed into the waves at approximately a 45-degree angle.
- Personal watercraft should approach waves head-on.
