Tye Preston Memorial Library (TPML) in Canyon Lake will officially break ground for an expansion-and-renovation project 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25.
The public is invited to attend.
The new wing for the popular library will provide enhanced programming and services as well as additional space for community gatherings.
“This groundbreaking marks a milestone for TPML,” said Library District Board President Susan Bogle. “Our library is beloved in the community and as the community has grown, we also need to grow and expand to meet the needs of our residents and visitors.”
Phase 1, which is fully funded, kicked off in July and includes a new library wing, updated and expanded community meeting rooms with A/V in every room and sound mitigation.
Phase 2, with an anticipated start in 2027, will convert existing community meeting rooms into a larger children’s area, separate teen and adult areas, create a dedicated children’s programming space and provide new AWE children’s computers.
Phase 3, which also kicks off in 2027, includes reconfiguration and renovation of library stacks for adult and teen areas, expanded Makerspace, a large gathering area with additional seating and add ‘bookable’ community spaces.
Construction is expected to be completed by 2028.
San Antonio-based Marksmen General Contractors, which worked on the Wimberley Village Public Library, will oversee construction.
Construction is funded through pledges, donations and TPML reserves. A Next Chapter campaign also raised funds. Comal County issued certificates of obligation to qualify the library for a loan.
Fundraising efforts continue. The library is $2 million short for Phase 3.
The library, located at 16311 S. Access Rd., opened at its current location in 2010.
Canyon Lake’s population has exploded since then, and the library has seen a steady increase in the number of visitors, program attendees, and material circulation, Bogle said.
