Comal County Democratic Chair Dr. Marilyn Aden, a retired Chicago physician, says the COVID-19 special enrollment period for uninsured Texans seeking healthcare through the federal government ends Sunday.

Amid the resurgence of COVID-19, high-quality health insurance is now available through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 is more affordable than ever, she said.

Enrollment opened in February.

“Anyone who needs health insurance for 2021 still has a few more days to enroll,” she said. “They can find high-quality affordable options, but they must visit HealthCare.gov by Sunday, Aug. 15 to sign up.”

The American Rescue Plan, signed into law earlier this year, provides substantial discounts for eligible uninsured Texans, who can now enroll in health insurance plans with no monthly cost.

Those whose incomes were too high to qualify them for discounted health insurance in the past are now eligible for generous premium discounts, Aden said.

Current enrollees who have updated their application lowered their monthly health-insurance costs by 38% on average, she said.

“Most people now qualify for discounts that help substantially lower their monthly health-insurance costs,” Aden said. “Current enrollees should visit HealthCare.gov today to claim these new discounts.”
