Are You Ready, MVMS?

The world-famous Harlem Wizards basketball team takes on Comal ISD Superintendent Andrew Kim, Comal County Precinct 4 Commissioner Jen Crownover, DARE officers, Canyon Lake-area teachers and other serious athletic types at “Who’s Your MVP?” 7 p.m. Monday, March 26 at Mountain Valley Middle School (MVMS), 1165 Sattler Rd, Canyon Lake.
The event is sponsored by Mountain Valley Middle School’s PTA but it isn’t a fundraiser, according to Valerie Lynn Visser.
“Who’s Your MVP?” night is about community outreach. She and co-organizer Wendy Nelms say anything that brings community members into schools and gets them involved in local education benefits students.
“We could have done that and increased ticket prices,” she says. “But we felt it was important to get more community members into the school — people who wouldn’t go into MVMS, like Mountain Valley Elementary School (MVES) parents. We want to do anything we can to put parents at ease about middle school and what’s offered there.”
Visser says MVP night is open to everyone — but urges members of churches and non-profits to attend and learn more about Canyon Lake schools “to help us get things done on the campus and to meet those ends that the budgets don’t meet.”
Tickets are $7 per person or $35 for courtside plus seating and can be purchased in advance by clicking here or at the door. Reserved seating is already sold out.
Canyon Lake’s MVP wannabes include Kim; Steve Stanford, Comal ISD Executive Director of Communications and Government Relations; Comal ISD Single Member District 3 Trustee Jason York; and Canyon Lake First Baptist Church Youth Leader Brian Gunter.
Rounding out the Hawk Stars are very popular DARE officers, teachers and coaches better known to Canyon Lake-area students at MVMS, MVES, Startzville Elementary School, Rebecca Creek Elementary School, and Canyon Lake High School as Officer Ron, Officer Roberts, Cpl. Martinez, Mr. Foster, Ms. Parker, Mr. Delong, Coach Amaro, Coach Burger, Coach Pawelek, Mr. Vamper, Mr. Mickey, Mr. A, Coach Oberholtzer, Mrs. Stanford, Mrs. McKinney, Coach Mendez, Mr. Herzog, AP Lehmberg, Counselor Wilson, Mrs. Cutsy and Mr. Greene.
The Wizards are a show basketball entity delivering wildly successful fundraiser events for schools and nonprofits, last season alone playing in over 400 communities across the USA, while raising over $2 million.
