The body of 22-year-old Aamir Ali, who disappeared during a camping trip in Potters Creek Park Friday, was discovered in Canyon Lake around 2 p.m. by Blue Diver Search and Recovery Team.

Comal County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Jennifer Smith said the Houston man was pronounced dead by Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace Judge Jennifer Saunders.

Ali was found in the water near the park.

Next of kin has been notified.

The former University of Houston college student told friends he was going for a walk Friday before disappearing. His clothes and cell phone were later discovered sitting by the lake.

Today’s discovery ends a desperate search by family members and friends who scoured the lake on foot and by boat, asking the public to help provide drones, boats, and other resources, and teaming up with other rescue groups.

According to a 10 a.m. update on a What’s App thread called “Aamir Tapal – S&R Team,” law enforcement planned to end the underwater search today, and the group was making plans to plow ahead by finding other resources.

CCSO spearheaded the official investigation with the support of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD).

A GoFundMe set up earlier today by Ali’s brother Qasim Ali has already raised $11,000.

“My beloved brother Aamir went missing in Canyon Lake while camping in Potters Creek Park – Site 48,” Ali posted. “His belongings were seen by the lake shore – but this fund is bigger than him. Funding will be going to Search & Rescue teams in the State of Texas.”
