Taste the honey, learn about pollinators and see if beekeeping might be for you at National Honey Bee Day Fair, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at Tye Preston Memorial Library, 16311 S. Access Rd., Canyon Lake.
The fair is sponsored by Tye Preston Memorial Library (TPML) and the Comal County Beekeepers Association.
(Fun fact from the librarians: Honey bees fly from 15 to 20 mph and beat their wings 200 times per second or 12,000 beats per minute.)
Schedule:
- 10 a.m. Plants for Pollinators — Listen to an overview of how your property can contribute to the health of honey bees, native bees, butterflies, moths and all pollinators.
- 11 a.m. How to Start Beekeeping — What are the costs associated? What are the steps to start? Where do bees come from?
- Noon. Equipment Demonstration — Personal protection, hive tools and smokers, feeders and hive components and more!
- 1 p.m. Honey Extraction Presentation — Live demonstration on how to harvest, extract and bottle honey from the hive.
