Canyon Lake Rotary Club’s Maureen Schein says polio is making a comeback due to the fighting in Gaza.
To raise funds to support vaccination clinics during ceasefires, the club has negotiated a two-to-one match for all donations made at the 11th Annual Pints for Polio, 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at Goofy’s, 13124 FM 306, Canyon Lake.
Musician Alex Dormont of the Hot Texas Swing Band performs.
Tickets/cover charges are $25. Beer will be served in commemorative pint cups.
Schein said Rotarians have focused on eradicating polio since 1985 — “and we are oh, so close to getting it done,” she said.
Funds raised at Saturday’s event will help pay for vaccination clinics.
The United States has been polio-free since the 1960s, she said.
“But I say we need to remember that polio really is only a plane ride away,” she said. “Thinking past Gaza, it was just a couple of years ago that one case was diagnosed in New York. If that person had come into contact with anyone who wasn’t vaccinated, it could have started a problem in the city, state or our country.”
