Comal County Sheriff's Office's Community Resource Team will etch VIN numbers on car windows this Thursday.
Comal County Sheriff’s Office offers free VIN (vehicle identification number) etching from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Bill Brown Elementary, 20410 Highway 46, Spring Branch.
Members of the Community Resource team will etch cars in the order vehicles arrive.
VIN etching deters auto theft because car windows are not stamped and can be interchangeable among many different years and models of vehicles, making them more desirable to thieves.
However, if a vehicle’s windows are stamped with a VIN number thieves would have to discard them before “parting out” stolen vehicles.
