Celebration of Life, Remembrance Ceremonies Planned for Comal County Judge Sherman Krause

A celebration of life for Comal County Judge Sherman Krause, 62, who died unexpectedly at his residence Feb. 7, is scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16 at Oakwood Church, 2154 Loop 337 North, New Braunfels.

A remembrance service follows from 5-7 p.m. at the Wursthalle on the Wurstfest grounds, 178 Landa Park Dr., New Braunfels.

Krause was elected county judge in 2011. He was not seeking reelection in the March 3 primary.

He graduated from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) and spent 10 years working for the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission/Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

Krause served as Comal County Tax Assessor-Collector including a term as president of the Tax Assessor-Collectors Association of Texas from 2008-2009. In 2007 he was named Tax Assessor-Collector of the Year.

As county judge he guided the county through significant growth while championing expanded facilities, long-term planning and responsible stewardship of taxpayer resources, according to his obituary in the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung.

“Over 24 years, he proudly represented the people of Comal County, always mindful that leadership meant listening first. In every role, Sherman led with humility, integrity and kindness — holding deep respect not only for the people he served, but for those he served alongside … Sherman’s life was one of stewardship and joy. He leaves behind a community made better by his service and a family shaped forever by his love.”

Krause was a member of the Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce, Wurstfest Association, United Way of Comal County and other civic organizations.

He served as Wurstfest president in 2024.

He is survived by wife, Melissa Krause; daughter Nicci Messenger and son-in-law Kurt Messenger; grandsons Colt and Emmitt; his parents Georgine and Walter Krause Jr.; and other family members.
