Canyon High School (CHS) 2016 graduate Nick Esqueda earned recognition as a 2016 outstanding performer at the UIL Texas State Percussion Solo Contest earlier this month.
Comal ISD says approximately 100,000 students participated in regional UIL music contests in 2016 and 25,000 performed at the state level contest. Less than three percent of students who performed in the August competition were named outstanding performers.
CHS band director, Jason Adam says Esqueda’s medal is identical to those awarded to state champions in all UIL events, describing it as a mark of musical excellence.
“Awards of this nature do not come easy and reflect not only your hard work but the efforts of many individuals in your life,” says State Music Director Bradley Kent. “Your parents, your school and your teachers are to be commended for their contribution to your success. I encourage you to share your honor with them. I extend to you my best wishes for continued success as you strive for musical excellence.”
