The U.S. National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio (NWS) and Comal County officials warn confidence is increasing for dangerous cold and the potential for “impactful ice” this weekend, especially for the Hill Country and areas along and north of I-35.

An arctic cold front arrives Friday, plunging temperatures to well below average. An upper-level disturbance could bring wintry precipitation.

The coldest wind chills are expected Saturday through Monday morning.

The minimum wind chill forecast shows New Braunfels at 59 degrees between noon and 6 p.m. Friday and between 13-34 degrees (possibly lower) Saturday through Monday.

NWS issues watches 48-72 hours in advance of a weather event. Fort Worth is expected to see icing as early as Friday afternoon.

Comal County spokesperson Cary Zayas said now is a good time to prepare and check on neighbors, seniors, and anyone who may need extra help during colder weather.

The City of New Braunfels urges residents to stay updated by following social media updates from the U.S. National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio, the city, and newbraunfels.gov.

Residents are reminded to:

  • Bring pets inside and make sure outdoor animals have warm shelter and fresh water.
  • Protect pipes and outdoor faucets. Insulate pipes and let faucets drip to maintain water flow.
  • Protect outdoor plants by covering them with sheets, towels, or blankets. Bring potted plants indoors.
  • Have warm clothing and blankets ready.
  • Use space heaters safely and keep them away from anything that can catch fire.

NWS advises the public to:

  • Trim weak or damaged branches around homes.
  • Avoid leaving vehicle wipers raised.
  • Have a week’s worth of food and prescriptions.
  • Keep devices charged.
  • Check on family, friends, and neighbors.
  • Limit or avoid time outdoors.
  • Dress in loose layers and cover all exposed skin.
  • Consume hot food and warm drinks, but avoid caffeine and alcohol.
