CLHS Cheerleaders Win UIL

Canyon Lake High School cheerleaders are 4A UIL Spirit State Champions.

Canyon Lake High School’s 18 cheerleaders won 4A UIL Spirit State Championship on Jan. 18, beating out 83 other teams with their fight songs, crowd-leading cheers and band chants.

Last year, the girls were silver medalists who won for their crowd-leading performance.

“My kids are very persistent and they really wanted it,” said varsity cheer coach Nikki Duggan Braunig, who also teaches social studies at Canyon Lake High School. “So they put in the time and effort every single day when we practiced. When ou want something like that so bad you’re going to train 100 percent. We’re all in. They have been that way from the start.”

Stephanie Blackwood also choreographed and coached the team.
