CLHS Seniors Recognized by Trustees for Participation in Virtual Texas Boys State

Share
Canyon Lake High School (CLHS) senior Jake Peters participated in the American Legion's Texas Boys State last summer and was recognized by Comal ISD trustees in November.

Five Comal ISD students who represented the district at last summer’s Texas Boys State session were recognized by trustees at their November board meeting.

Canyon Lake High School (CLHS) seniors Jake Peters and Lucas Garcia represented the district virtually this summer at the American Legion’s Boys State program, which provides firsthand experience in government.

Smithson Valley High School (SVHS) seniors Marshall Tidwell, Conner Stevenson and Joshua Davidson also participated in the program, which gives students the opportunity to participate in mock local, county, state and federal government.

Participants are divided into two parties, Federalists and Nationalists. They are tasked with forming platforms, running for office, holding elections, and writing and passing legislation.

“Boys State gave me a unique insight into the way our government systems operate,” Tidwell said. “I found that while it is hard to come to a consensus on some issues, there are many things that everyone has in common.”

Stevenson said the program provided insight into the electoral process “by showing me the significance of each position and how everyone works.”

Davidson said he sees things differently now when it comes to creating and passing legislation.

“You have to plan for how the bill will be implemented once it is passed,” he said.
