Coach Monzingo Retires

Coach Matt Monzingo will retire Aug. 31 after four years as head of Comal ISD’s athletic program.
Smithson Valley High School head volleyball Coach Liana Gombert will become the new athletic director. She will remain at Smithsom Valley until the end of the volleyball season.
During this time, Executive Director of Secondary Education Corbee Wunderlich, will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Athletics Department. After the 2016 volleyball season, a committee will be formed to find a new volleyball coach for Smithson Valley.
Gombert has served as head volleyball coach at Smithson Valley High School since 2004. There, she accumulated a record of 576-345, including 11 playoff appearances. She worked as head volleyball coach in both Boerne ISD and Katy ISD.
“I am so honored that Mr. Kim would ask me to be the Director of Athletics for Comal ISD,” she says. “As a product of Comal ISD, I have been so grateful to have had the opportunity to come home and work at Smithson Valley High School with some of the best coaches, administrators and players any coach could ask for. My aim will be to continue the serve the district as Jim Rodrigue and Matt Monzingo have, two men that I have the highest regard for.”
Monzingo joined Comal ISD as the head football coach and athletic coordinator at Canyon Lake High School when the school opened in 2007. He became athletic director in 2012, after Athletic Director Jim Rodrigue died.
During his tenure as coach, Monzingo led his teams to the playoffs 12 times, and posted a 148-68 overall career record. In 1991, he led Memphis High School to the Class A State Championship.
“Coach Monzingo’s retirement gave us the opportunity to promote a qualified internal candidate who can continue our work to grow and improve the district’s athletic program, particularly as the program expands as we bring future schools online,” says Comal ISD Superintendent Andrew Kim. “I am excited about having Coach Gombert be part of the district’s leadership team and being an integral part of our future success.”
