A 33-year-old Colorado man who was visiting his girlfriend drowned in the Guadalupe River in the Rebecca Creek area near Boat Ramp 11 around 7 p.m. Sunday.
A New Braunfels woman said her two young children were swimming with Brian Stein when the five-year-old asked where he was.
Canyon Lake native Katelyn Moore said around 12 adults immediately started searching for Stein, her best friend’s boyfriend, before calling 9-1-1 at 7:08 p.m.
“It’s very surreal, he didn’t even want to be in Texas,” she said. It took her friend two years to convince him to visit — “and this happened.”
Moore said first responders included South Hays Fire Department, Canyon Lake Fire/EMS and area law enforcement.
Divers found Stein approximately 20 minutes after they arrived.
“He was a very, very good guy,” Moore said.
Next of kin has been notified. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is investigating.
