Comal County lifted the burn ban for 43 hours today thanks to steady, consistent rainfall over the last 24 hours.
The burn ban goes back into effect at 6 a.m. Saturday.
Fire Marshal Kory Klabunde said the burn ban could be rescinded completely if the rain continues.
“We can only temporarily lift the burn ban for up to 48 hours,” he said. “Forty-three hours was chosen so the burn ban would be back in effect before individuals would be able to burn. That way, someone doesn’t start a fire and then it becomes illegal. That is the same reason the burn ban starts at 6:00 am.”
The Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) dropped to 488 points today. By law, county commissioners must enact a burn ban at 500 points.
