Comal Democrats and Indivisible NBTX, part of a nationwide group of progressive Democrats, will gather at the Main Plaza in New Braunfels from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 8, to show their support for two pieces of voting-rights legislation before the U.S. Congress, For the People’s Act and The John Lewis Act.

The event also coincides with the opening day of the Texas Legislature’s special session, where Gov. Greg Abbott and Texas Republicans are pushing for passage of Senate Bill (SB) 7. Democrats argue the bill would make it difficult for voters who lack transportation and are shift workers to vote.

“The rally is about allowing to keep voting rights for everyone,” said Kim Farlow, president of the Democrats of Comal County.

The GOP’s priority voting bill also would limit early voting hours and curb local voting options like drive-thru voting, according to the Texas Tribune.

In a press release today, Abbott said SB 7 will strengthen the integrity of elections in Texas.
