Comal ISD Will Not Go Remote-Only Between Holidays, Kim Says

Responding to “the social media Rumor of the Week,” Comal ISD Superintendent Andrew Kim said in an email today that the district will not go 100-percent remote between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

He believes the rumor started after several schools in other districts in the region closed due to an increase in COVID-19 cases.

“We know the numbers of positive cases are going up both locally and statewide, and certainly these trends could potentially change the overall situation in ways that are out of our control,” he said. “However, we still have a lot in our control — following health-and-safety guidelines, wearing masks, and social distancing — to ensure that we don’t turn a rumor into a reality.”

Although Comal is seeing an increase in cases as well, Kim said the district evaluates the potential to close campuses on a case-by-case basis after evaluating the “contextual situation.”

“For example, our data tells us that student-to-student transmission rarely occurs at school, but instead happens at social gatherings during the evenings and weekends,” he said. “Knowing this, we continually reinforce the importance of adhering to our established health-and-safety procedures both at and away from school.”
