According to Comal County, a vehicle identification number or VIN is a combination of 17 numbers and letters that are unique for every vehicle. VIN etching is the process of permanently etching a car’s unique VIN into all of its windows, making it unprofitable for thieves to steal.
In a statement, the county said VIN-etched vehicles have a 65% lower theft-rate than non-etched vehicles. Cars with VINs etched have an 85% or better chance of recovery if stolen. Many insurance companies offer discounts on VIN-etched vehicles.
