County Announces Further Closures, Including Courthouse

Comal County's historic courthouse, built in 1898 and formally dedicated in 1899, is closed due to COVID-19.

The historic courthouse and other Comal County offices are closing to foot traffic in an effort to protect the public and county employees from potential exposure to the novel coronavirus, Comal County said in a press release today.

The County Clerk’s Office also has closed to public traffic, and the Tax Office will not open its doors Friday morning. These closures also apply to Tax Office and Clerk’s Office satellite locations in Bulverde and Sattler.

However, these offices remain open and employees can be reached by phone or via email to handle public inquiries and provide direction to possible online resources.

The county’s main switchboard number is 830-221-1100.

The closures come as the Office of Public Health continues to coordinate the county’s response to the coronavirus and the disease it causes, COVID-19.

“We are encouraging our residents to take the guidelines issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention very seriously and to follow the orders issued by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday,” said Public Health Director Cheryl Fraser.

As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, Comal County had received reports from state and local laboratories of 25 tests conducted, including one positive result. The number of conducted tests is expected to increase as local labs increase their testing capacity.

Details of the county’s recent closures are as follows:

  • The Historic Courthouse is closed to the public. The main county switchboard at 830-221-1100 remains operational for residents with questions on where to go for county business.
  • The Comal County Tax Office will close to in-person traffic beginning Friday at its main location in New Braunfels and at branch locations in Sattler and Bulverde. The office’s phone lines will remain open, 830-221-1353, and motor vehicle dealers can call the office for an appointment to pick up necessary documents. Info on payments and other transactions can be found at www.comalcountytaxoffice.net.
  • The Comal County Clerk’s Office has closed its offices to public traffic.
  • The District Clerk’s Office also has restricted public access to its office and has suspended passport processing. The county’s COVID-19 page has more information and instructions for attorneys needing to file in both county and district courts.
