Share
Bring a photo ID to verify residency and items like paint, gasoline, insecticide and bleach to Saturday's event.

Comal County and the City of New Braunfels will accept household hazardous waste from 8 a.m. to noon this Saturday, May 18, in the parking lot of New Braunfels City Hall, 550 Landa St., New Braunfels.

Participants should enter the parking lot from Laurel Lane. Bring a photo ID with current address.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is a chemical product that has any one or a combination of these properties:

  • Reactive: pool chlorine, drain cleaner, hydrogen peroxide
  • Toxic: herbicide, pesticide, fungicide
  • Ignitable: gasoline, lighter fluid, paint thinner, stains
  • Corrosive: muriatic acid, laundry bleach, oven cleaner

Typical items include paint, gasoline, insecticides and bleach. Prohibited items are ammunition, explosives, flares, fireworks, compressed natural-gas cylinders, medical waste, pharmaceuticals, radioactive materials, commercial waste, tires, trash and electronics.

Residents are advised not to mix any items, and to transport them only in a car trunk or truck bed. Items should be in their original, properly sealed-and-labeled containers. Liquid wastes should not exceed five gallons. Trailer loads will not be accepted.

Chemicals react with other non-hazardous trash, creating toxic fumes or fires in your garbage cart or in garbage trucks. Fumes and fires create a real danger to residents, county employees, other drivers, and landfill employees. Over the long term, chemicals placed carelessly in the trash can eventually seep down through the landfill’s protective clay barrier and into the ground or groundwater.
