The rain may be tapering off but the burn ban isn’t.
Comal County spokesperson Cary Zayas warned residents on social media that while rainfall Tuesday and today helps, it isn’t enough to safely lift the burn ban.
By law, the Commissioners Court enacts burn bans when the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) rises to 500 points and rescinds them when the index falls below 500 points.
Today’s KDI is 634.
A strong cold front will move through the area over the next several days, with wind speeds expected to exceed 25 mph.
“Even if the burn ban could be lifted, those wind conditions would prohibit outdoor burning due to safety concerns,” she said.
KBDI is a numerical scale used to estimate soil and vegetation dryness and assess wildfire risk. The index is based on daily maximum temperature, recent rainfall and soil moisture depletion over time.
