Some things take a while. Other things get postponed. In the case of the new Community Resource and Recreation Center of Canyon Lake’s (CRRC) Resource Center, it was both. And more.
On Tuesday, June 22 at 5:30 p.m., CRRC will host a chamber mixer along with our grand opening. It’s been a long time coming.
The new Resource Center idea began at a strategic planning session of board and staff in 2013. It was obvious the resource program had already outgrown its 2,000-square-foot facility. Planning began for a new building.
By 2018, the floor plans were ready. Ground was broken in August.
Then it started raining and we had an 11,000-square-foot swimming pool that was about three-feet deep.
It wasn’t until November of 2019 that the office staff, personnel and furnishings were able to move into the building. Further weather delays, subcontractor issues, and shipment delays could have tried the patience of anyone.
We pretty much took it in stride. After all, we’d already been waiting five years!
Jason Derscheid, executive director, said it was frustrating for everyone to have to wait through the COVID-19 shutdown to celebrate the new facility.
“We were all busy making adjustments to our program, the food pantry and keeping everyone safe,” he said. “But just like everyone else, we wanted to get on with normalcy.”
Derscheid set the grand opening, hoping that everyone would have had their vaccinations by June. Or at least had the opportunity to have it.
“We’re excited about welcoming our guests on Tuesday,” he said. “We’ll welcome members of the public on Wednesday for tours of the facility.”
Canyon Lake’s Chamber of Commerce will oversee the ribbon cutting at 5:30 p.m., followed by a mixer for chamber members.
