McKenna Foundation Chief Executive Officer Alice Jewell surprised Community Resource and Recreation Center (CRRC)'s Maureen Schein and Darin Zumwalt with a $5,000 check honoring the charity's outreach.

Community Resource and Recreation Center of Canyon Lake (CRRC) received special holiday cheer from its nonprofit peers in Comal County on Friday morning.

At the annual breakfast meeting at McKenna Foundation in New Braunfels, Chief Executive Officer Alice Jewell surprised CRRC Executive Director Darin Zumwalt and Resource Program Director Maureen Schein with a $5,000 check.

“The CRRC is a great local organization that helps so many folks who are in need,” the Children’s Advocacy Center of Comal County posted on its Facebook page.

Schein said she had no idea CRRC even made the shortlist for today’s honor.

“When Alice started looking around the room for us this morning and said Darin’s name I was surprised and blessed at the same time,” she said. “These are fellow nonprofits that do amazing work and offer some awesome services to people in our county. To be singled out by them for this honor is just that — an honor.”

Many of the charities also in attendance at today’s breakfast will share some office space in the CRRC’s new facility.

“It’s going to be a one-stop-shop, and we could not do it without a lot of friendly organizations,” Schein said.
