Dam Service Road Closes for Herbicide Application

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Canyon Lake is restricting access to the dam's service road for herbicide application.

One of Canyon Lake’s most beautiful vistas will be off limits early next week, but not due to the coronavirus.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Canyon Lake will close the dam service road on Monday, March 16,  for herbicide application.

The work is expected to take two days to complete.

An agency contractor will stage equipment and spray the rip-rap and the downstream embankment for woody plants and other unwanted vegetation.

“We understand a large number of people use the dam service road as a place to walk, take pictures, and enjoy being outdoors, but for the safety of all visitors, including pets enjoying a walk with their owner, we will be restricting access until the work is completed,”  Canyon Lake manager, Javier Pérez Ortiz, said in a press release.

The Corps anticipates reopening the road on March 18, when the contractor moves his equipment onto the downstream embankment and off the Dam Service Road.

“Herbicide application on Canyon Dam occurs twice a year, once in spring and once in late summer,” said Ortiz.
