Don’t Miss Texas Clay Festival

The 24th annual Texas Clay Festival kicks off this weekend in Gruene beneath four tents located under the tourist destination’s famed oak tree, just behind Mozie’s.

Organizers promise the event is more than just another craft show.

A good time, celebrating the media of clay and educating the public about ceramic arts is the focus of Texas Clay Festival.

Particularly popular are raku pottery demonstrations — known as “instant-gratification” pottery, because ceramics are fired in pits instead of in kilns that take hours to make pottery.

“We’re also offering ‘paint your own raku’ that allows people to glaze pottery created by an artist and take it home,” says Angie White, owner of The Barn in Gruene and one of the show’s several coordinators. “

“There’s lots of good stuff to buy. We have 75 booths where art is sold by the people who make it.”

There’s also a special area where kids can make clay sculptures under the watchful eyes of experienced artists.

Also a hit is a silent auction benefiting Texas State University’s Ceramics Department as well as area potters who need financial assistance. TSU students volunteer at the festival.

Clay enthusiasts can observe demonstrations in wheel throwing, sculpture, hand-building and surface decoration techniques.

Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23.
