Democratic Women of Comal County (DWCC) hosts a pro-choice Women’s March & Rally in protest of Texas’ Senate Bill 8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Main Plaza in downtown New Braunfels.
The event is a ‘sister march’ with the national Women’s March organization, which is planning similar events in Austin, Washington D.C. and other major U.S. cities.
New Braunfels participants will march around the perimeter on the plaza sidewalk or can bring a chair and rally with other pro-choice supporters.
No seats are available on the bus to the Austin march.
The march and rally are in response to Texas’ SB 8, which went into effect on Sept. 1.
Also called the “heartbeat bill,” SB 8 bans abortions in the state after six weeks of pregnancy with no exceptions for rape, sexual abuse, incest or fetal anomaly diagnoses. It also allows private citizens to sue abortion providers and anyone else who aids and abets a woman seeking an abortion.
“Reproductive rights are human rights,” said Liz Wilkes, DWCC president. “We invite everyone to join us in sending this message to legislators everywhere. Since 1973, states have passed hundreds of laws that restrict people’s access to abortion. We will no longer tolerate this relentless offensive and we will not tolerate SB 8.”
DWCC says its 100 members seek to further the well-being of women and children by electing progressive candidates and by participating in humanitarian projects.
Me and my granddaughter would love to join.
